Designing a garden that works with its site

Good landscaping starts long before planting. Reading your site — its sun, soil, slopes and how you'll use it — turns a collection of plants into a garden that more or less looks after itself.

Garden planning basics

Before choosing a single plant, it pays to understand the canvas. Spend time noticing where water sits after rain, which corners bake in afternoon sun, where wind funnels through, and how you actually move through and use the space.

  • Observe the site across different times of day and, ideally, seasons.
  • Note existing features worth keeping — established trees, views, shade.
  • Be honest about how much time you want to spend maintaining it.
  • Sketch rough zones before committing to detail.

Zoning a backyard

Dividing a garden into zones — by use and by growing conditions — makes everything that follows easier. Group together areas that share sun, soil and water needs, and separate the high-care, frequently used spaces from the low-input background plantings.

Zoning by water need is one of the most practical moves in Australian gardening: it lets you water thirsty areas properly without wasting water on tough plants that don't want it.

Shade vs sun mapping

Sunlight is the currency plants spend, and it varies enormously across even a small garden. Mapping where full sun, part sun and shade fall — and how that shifts through the year — tells you what can go where.

Shade-loving plants such as ferns thrive where direct sun is limited — the right plant for a difficult, low-light corner.

A spot in full summer sun may be shaded in winter; a wall may radiate heat well into the evening. These details decide success far more than plant labels alone.

Irrigation principles

Whether you water by hand or by system, the principles are the same: deliver water to roots, not leaves; water deeply and less often; and group plants so a single zone suits everything in it.

  • Drip and sub-surface systems lose far less to evaporation than overhead sprays.
  • Watering early in the day reduces loss and disease.
  • Mulch makes every drop go further by slowing evaporation.
  • Match delivery to soil — sandy soils need shorter, more frequent cycles than clay.

Designing with natives follows a simple logic: start from the conditions, choose species that suit them, then arrange by need and form. Rather than forcing a fixed picture onto the site, you work with what the site offers and let suitable plants do the heavy lifting.

Work with the site, not against it. A garden matched to its sun, soil and rainfall will always be easier — and usually more beautiful — than one fighting them.
